Frequently asked questions — Heating
- How much does a new boiler cost in the UK?
- A like-for-like combi boiler swap typically costs £2,000–£3,500 installed. System or regular boiler installs run £2,500–£4,500. Full system replacements with new flue, controls and a power-flush can reach £4,500–£6,500.
- How often should a UK boiler be serviced?
- Annually, by a Gas Safe registered engineer. An annual service costs £80–£140 and is required to keep most manufacturers' warranties valid (often 7–12 years on new boilers).
- Should I repair or replace my boiler?
- If your boiler is over 10–12 years old, repairs exceed £400, or parts are no longer available, replacement is usually the better long-term call. Newer A-rated boilers also cut gas bills by 15–25%.
- Do I need a Gas Safe engineer for any heating work?
- Yes — any work on gas pipework, boilers, gas hobs or gas fires must legally be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer in the UK. Electric radiators, wet-system flushing and non-gas heating controls are exempt.
- Is it worth upgrading to a heat pump?
- Air-source heat pumps cost £8,000–£14,000 installed but qualify for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England and Wales. Running costs are competitive with gas only if your home is well insulated.
