How to Create a Business Model With AI

Updated 7 October 2026 · ModernExpert.AI editorial team

Quick answer

Create a business model with AI by asking it to draft a Business Model Canvas from your research, then generate two or three alternative models and compare them on margin, cash needs and fit with your constraints. You choose the model; AI makes the options and trade-offs visible.

The Business Model Canvas in plain English

The canvas is a one-page summary of how a business works. Its nine blocks:

  • Customer segments — who you serve.
  • Value proposition — what problem you solve for them.
  • Channels — how you reach and deliver.
  • Customer relationships — self-serve, personal, community.
  • Revenue streams — how and when you get paid.
  • Key resources — what you must have.
  • Key activities — what you must do well.
  • Key partners — who you rely on.
  • Cost structure — what it costs to run.

Drafting the canvas with AI

Paste your persona, competitor summary and validation results, then ask AI to fill each block. Ask it to mark anything not supported by your evidence. A canvas grounded in your research is far more useful than a generic one.

Compare alternative models

The same idea can be monetised very differently. A bookkeeping business could charge hourly, a fixed monthly retainer, or sell a self-serve template plus paid reviews. Ask AI to describe two or three models side by side with revenue per customer, delivery cost, cash-flow timing and scalability.

Unit economics

Ask AI to set out the unit economics of your preferred model: average revenue per customer, variable cost per customer, gross margin, customer acquisition cost and how many months it takes to earn that cost back. These numbers feed directly into your financial plan.

Competitive advantage

Finally, ask what would stop a competitor copying you next month. Common small-business advantages are specialist expertise, a niche focus, local relationships, a strong reputation, or proprietary content and data. Be honest — 'we'll work harder' is not an advantage.

Prompts to try

Canvas draft

Using my research below, fill in a Business Model Canvas for [business]. Mark any block not supported by evidence. [paste]

Model comparison

Compare 3 business models for [idea]: describe each, then compare revenue per customer, delivery cost, cash timing, scalability and risk in a table.

Unit economics

Set out the unit economics for this model with formulas: price [£], variable cost [£], acquisition cost [£], churn [%]. Explain what each result means.

Common mistakes

  • Copying a famous company's model without the same advantages.
  • Ignoring how long it takes to get paid.
  • Too many revenue streams at launch.
  • No view of acquisition cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a business model and a business plan?

A business model explains how the business creates and earns value; the business plan is the full document that sets out the model plus market, marketing, operations, financials and risks.

Is the Business Model Canvas still useful?

Yes. It is a quick way to see every part of the business on one page and spot gaps before writing the full plan.

Can I change my business model later?

Most businesses adjust their model after real customers arrive. Plan for the most likely model and note the alternatives you would switch to.
